Business in the vision of sustainability

Despite all the advances made in the last century, the paths of sustainable development still depend on a practice that legitimizes the modern concepts proposed by scholars and experts on environmental issues.

It was hoped that the seeds of Agenda 21, which were planted during the Rio 92 Meeting, germinated at the threshold of the new milenium.However, just a quick reflection on the subject is needed to outline the contours of a collective dream delay. We can conclude that, if the proposition in theory is perfect, the planned strategies have not been enough to reach the full consciousness of human beings and make them reconsider their relations with the other and the environment that surrounds.

There is no doubt that all human intervention on the planet causes some kind of impact, going beyond the mere consumption of natural resources to reach other dimensions of the social and even cultural spheres. Forecasts indicate that by 2025 we will have more than 60% of 6 billion people living in urban areas in the world. In Brazil, this figure may reach 85%. This being an irreversible trend, “to grow without destroying” becomes a pressing challenge. Larger cities – incessantly consuming resources and generating waste – will certainly mean problems in the same proportion. The field will have the task to generate power and provide food in a new ecoproductive basis.

Society has been acquiring huge gains in technological and scientific knowledge. Unfortunately,it gradually lost its ability to transform knowledge into wisdom,a virtue that will only be obtained with the transformation of knowledge into “non egotistical” practices. Only this internal change, in gestures and responsible attitudes, can provide the human elements needed to achieve effective and sustainable development while ensuring our own survival as a species.

One must understand that the laws and the consequent environmental requirements they generate – often criticized as mere bureaucracy – are actually opportunities for improvement in the preservation of humanity and, democratically, of the other forms of life on the planet. If carried out intelligently, actions in tune with the environment aggregate, besides competitive quality, economic value to productive enterprises.

In this scenario, there is a convergence and direct gain for both, the environment and society. A good project has to be born with environmental issues solved, making its environmental, social and economic sustainability a market competitive icon.
